Preserving Japanese modernist architecture for future generations: Bottega Veneta launches special page for Hotel Okura Tokyo

Jun 22, 2015

Bottega Veneta is launching the second phase of its project to promote the preservation and interest in Japanese modernist architecture.

The project was launched last November when the Hotel Okura Tokyo's main building was announced for reconstruction, and the brand's creative director, Tomas Maier, learned that this iconic modernist building was in danger of disappearing.

The first phase included a collaboration with lifestyle magazine CASA BRUTUS on a special issue on Japanese modernist architecture, and a symposium at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa to discuss various buildings at risk of demolition.

For the second phase, the brand has launched a special page on its official website for the Hotel Okura Tokyo, considered one of the greatest surviving buildings in the modernist tradition. Video messages from fans of the hotel from various fields, including architecture, art, and design, have been released. Architect Toshiko Mori, designer Marc Newson, and contemporary artist Hiroshi Sugimoto have all praised the Hotel Okura Tokyo as a modernist architectural gem.

The project also expands on the social media initiative "#MyMomentAtOkura," which began in the first phase. This project invites users to take photos of the Hotel Okura Tokyo Main Building and share them on their Instagram accounts with the hashtag "#MyMomentAtOkura." A new initiative is also planned: selected photos will be transformed into unique illustrations.
