Each bookstore will act as a concierge, recommending "the book you should read now" to FASHION HEADLINE readers. Every Thursday, each branch of the art bookstore "NADiff" will introduce a recommended book. This time, we will be introducing the book recommended by NADiff Contemporary, a branch in Kiyosumi Shirakawa, Tokyo (4-1-1 Miyoshi, Koto-ku, Tokyo, inside the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo).
■ "Kishio Suga: Situated Latency" Hasegawa Yuko, Seki Naoko (Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo), Simon Groom (Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art)
This book also serves as the official catalog for the exhibition "Kishio Suga: Situated Latency," currently being held at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo.
Suga was a member of the "Mono-ha" movement, which existed in Japan around the 1970s and questioned the anti-art movement that had previously focused on performance art, and sought to recreate art by presenting raw materials such as wood, stone, and iron in their original, almost untouched state.
Through a thorough elimination of imagination and a time-consuming reconsideration of perception, the "things" that reveal their true essence while maintaining differences and relationships exude an uncanny presence. Exhibitions showcasing these works, including installations, bring a powerful sense of reality to visitors.
This book contains pages of illustrations primarily showcasing works from the 1970s, when Suga's concepts were radically new, as well as black-and-white pages covering his 48-year career from 1967 to 2015. It also includes texts worth digging into, such as an essay on Suga by the curator and never-before-seen commentary on his production notes. Given the paucity of books on Mono-ha, this is sure to be an important addition. It also includes a booklet of exhibition views.
The exhibition opened on January 24th and runs through March 22nd.
