■ "Modern Times: The Age of Photography"
This book was published in conjunction with the special exhibition "Modern Times ~ The Age of Photography," held in November 2014 to commemorate the renovation of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
Previously, the museum's exhibits mainly featured 19th-century photographs, but in 1994 it began collecting 20th-century photographs as well, and this exhibition marked the first public unveiling of this new collection. The collection features over 350 photographs, ranging from Eadweard Muybridge, famous for his stop-motion photography of animals and humans in the late 19th century, to Dutch photographer Viviane Sassen, whose work gained popularity through Louis Vuitton campaigns and whose first photo exhibition in Japan in 2014 was a huge success. The book was designed by Irma Boom, a world-renowned book designer whose books have been included in permanent exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. While many collections of works for museum exhibitions are conventional, this one's cover appears unassuming at first glance, revealing sophisticated page designs and typefaces. The book also features attention to detail, such as yellowing of the edges, and a beautiful appearance. Even if you don't know much about the photographer, it is a book you can enjoy just by looking at it.
