Saint Laurent presented its Men's Summer 2024 collection at the New Nationalgalerie, a modernist masterpiece and museum of contemporary art in Berlin.

A modernist masterpiece and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's last major project, Berlin's New Nationalgalerie is an artistic temple of glass and steel, stripped back yet resolutely reminiscent of classicism, still as fresh today as it was when it opened in 1968. This iconic pavilion is the perfect backdrop for Anthony Vaccarello to reimagine Saint Laurent's essential themes with an attitude and ease suited to modern life.

The Spring/Summer 2024 collection revisits and evolves ideas explored in recent Saint Laurent collections. Most importantly, the free interplay between masculine and feminine elements is central. Pieces reminiscent of previous women's collections are reconfigured, showcasing the open-ended diversity of the Saint Laurent wardrobe's evolving style. Sharp silhouettes, yet unexpectedly light, feature loose upper bodies and high-waisted fluted trousers. Tailored jackets with exaggerated shoulders and blouses with one shoulder left bare nod to the brand's past.

Simple draping and repositioned polka dots and leopard print give familiar motifs a timely personality, while confident mixed stripes subvert conventional notions of harmony. In a menswear context, couture fabrics like muslin lose their traditional meaning. A Saint Laurent tuxedo paired with a full-body satin tank top appears classic at first glance, but upon closer inspection it reveals a forward-thinking quality.

The set, designed by Anthony Vaccarello, also highlights the visionary architecture. The fluidity of the dark curtains creates a dialogue with the building's distinctive grid frame. A single ray of bright light, like the sun rising over the city center at dusk, floods the space, signifying rebirth and the continuity of the seasons.
