Shibuya gallery NANZUKA will host Harumi Yamaguchi's solo exhibition, "HARUMI GALS," from February 28 to April 4. Yamaguchi was headhunted by then-President Michiji Masuda when Parco opened in 1969, and has since been working on advertising illustrations. At a time when women were not given the right to advance in society, she depicted women playing baseball, boxing, skateboarding, and other sports. Sociologist Chizuko Ueno has praised her depictions of women enjoying their sexuality and life, saying, "While appearing to fit into a male-tailored erotic scenario, her excessive portrayal deconstructs male desire and idealizes the female body beyond men's reach." In 1972, Yamaguchi became a pioneer in Japan, beginning to use airbrush techniques. As a pioneer of hyper-realistic illustration, she dominated the Japanese advertising industry. This exhibition will feature dozens of illustrations, primarily airbrush works from her time at Parco. A reception party will be held on the 28th from 6pm, with the artist in attendance.
