Kyosuke Chinai's solo exhibition: Western-style paintings of flowers, birds, wind, and the moon on Japanese paper that evoke the primal landscape of the Japanese people

Feb 27, 2015

"Kiyosuke Chinai: The Exhibition" by painter Kyosuke Chinai will be held at Galerie Tamenaga Osaka from March 13th to April 12th. After studying oil painting at Tokyo University of the Arts, in the 1980s he established a technique that transcends the boundaries between Japanese and Western painting, painting with acrylic paints on washi paper. He expanded his horizons overseas, holding solo exhibitions in Paris in 2000 and London last fall. His works have attracted worldwide attention, including a call for entries from the Rothschild family. The exhibition will feature a series of works titled "Utopia," exploring Jinnai's recent pursuit of primal Japanese landscapes, such as flowers and mountains. Key works on display include "Amanomiya Hanaakari," featuring a beautiful contrast between the blue of the night sky and the pink of cherry blossoms, as well as "The Birth Cry of the Earth: Muroto" and "The Origin of Seiyo Island." The vibrant butterflies that appear throughout his works create a fantastical worldview. Also scheduled for exhibition is "Richinbana: Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter," a painting of flowers offered before shrines and Buddhist altars, based on works in the Tokyo National Museum's collection.

One of the most notable works is "Autumn Grasses in Musashino: Whose Sleeves Are They?", a type of "Who's Sleeves Are They?" that depicts a large number of garments draped on a clothes rack or folding screen. This was produced frequently at the beginning of the Edo period, and not only can it be viewed as a still life, but the kimonos and incense burners depicted can also evoke nonexistent figures, such as courtesans.

Chinai will also be participating in a reception on March 12, the day before the exhibition.
