New York-based photographer Katsu Naito's solo exhibition "Once in Harlem" will be held from December 11th to 31st at the gallery space "ART UP" in Men's Creators on the 2nd floor of the Isetan Shinjuku Men's Building.
"Professor Williams on 116th Street" (11x14 inches, ¥60,000 framed)
"Professor Williams on 116th Street" (11x14 inches, ¥60,000 framed)
Katsu Naito moved to the United States in 1983 and, in search of more excitement, visited Harlem, where he became captivated. He lived there for approximately five and a half years from 1988. Living a life fraught with fear and tension, he gradually became accepted by the people and the city over the course of two years. He published a photo book, "Once in Harlem," capturing the Harlem of that time, captured from the early to mid-1990s.
"Harlem Tree" (11x14 inches, ¥60,000 framed)
"Harlem Tree" (11x14 inches, ¥60,000 framed)
This exhibition features nine selected photographs from "Once in Harlem," including "Twin in Morning Side Park," "Harlem Tree," and "Professor Williams on 116th Street." These photographs, originally stored as negatives, are developed and printed, along with a photo book. Also available are silkscreen prints of selected photographs on cut-and-sew items. The 11x14 inch photographs, framed, are priced at ¥60,000. As these items are made to order, delivery will be mid-February 2020.
This is a special opportunity to experience the "Harlem of that time" as only Katsu Naito, who lived and worked in the same community, could capture it. Additionally, an interview with Katsu Naito will be published on Isetan Men's' official media outlet, "IMn," on December 16th.
