GANRYU is always casual, yet always one step ahead of the pack. On February 4th, the brand held its 2015-16 Fall/Winter collection show at IDOL in Aoyama. This was the first time the brand had held a runway show outside of Comme des Garçons since the 2013-14 Fall/Winter season. The men's theme was "Odd Basic." True to its name, "odd" means strange or bizarre, this collection featured a variety of twists on GANRYU styles, including checks, sarouel pants, mixed-material combinations, and rubber soles. Eye-catching designs included folk elements like Tyrolean tape and Cowichan knitwear. Designer GANRYU Ayato said he was drawn to the "simple, warm artificiality." Down jackets and MA-1 jackets all looked voluminous and warm. However, there were twists, such as shirt fabric construction and tailored fronts. The pieces were designed as "fashion" rather than functional wear. A canvas tote reminiscent of LL Bean was customized with a full-front pocket, and chukka boots were adapted for running with Vibram soles. Strong, realistic clothing with diverse twists was introduced. The theme for the women's collection, the third season, was "Gimmick Dress." Items featured gimmicks, such as curved cuts, flared and draped pieces, and combinations of different patterns on the front and back. Boa fleece and quilted designs added an interesting sense of volume. Satin crepe and velour also offered a lustrous impression. "We're always thinking about making things stronger and more wearable. Ideally, clothes suitable for any occasion are ideal. Our brand concept, 'casual wear for looking forward,' is what we ultimately want to create. We always do our best to present our collections," said Maruryu.
