J. Front Retailing announced preliminary sales figures for May on the 3rd. Daimaru Matsuzakaya Department Stores' total figures increased 9.7% year-on-year, while the department store business as a whole increased 8.7%. Both Daimaru Matsuzakaya Department Stores and the department store business exceeded their year-ago results for the 10th consecutive month.
Contributing to the sales increase were the Matsuzakaya Ginza store (which closed on June 30th due to the Ginza redevelopment and reconstruction), which continues to benefit from clearance sales, and the Daimaru Tokyo store, which opened with an expanded floor space in October last year. The Matsuzakaya Ginza store continued to see a significant increase in sales, reaching 138.2%, while the Daimaru Tokyo store maintained strong sales, increasing 37.9%.
Sales at regional stores were also strong, with the Matsuzakaya Nagoya store, which is scheduled to grand open its food department on the 19th of this month, achieving a 24.7% increase. Thanks to the effects of ongoing renovations and a significant increase in sales of high-priced items, this marks the seventh consecutive month of year-on-year growth. Elsewhere, the Daimaru Sapporo store achieved year-on-year growth for the fourth consecutive month. The Daimaru Umeda store saw a 7.1% decrease, and the Daimaru Kobe store a 1.8% decrease, but 13 of the 16 directly managed stores and two affiliated department stores exceeded their year-on-year results.
By product category, high-end watches, jewelry and luxury brands recorded significant growth. In addition, there was brisk sales of early summer seasonal items such as umbrellas and sunglasses, as well as summer clothing such as dresses and shirts.
