Using two simple elements—a single piece of foam and a drill—the Nike React Element 87 was developed as a shoe that maximizes cushioning with the goal of enhancing underfoot comfort during various daily movements, such as standing, shifting your center of gravity, walking, and running.
During the development phase, designers used various foot pressure distribution diagrams and drills to find the thickness and density that would provide the best comfort and then changed direction.
Using elements called tiles that graphically represent equations, the shapes of midsoles with different densities created in drill experiments are patterned based on material density and foot pressure distribution diagrams, and then made to fit the size of the shoe. This process is very similar to the design of the Nike Epic React Flyknit.
In fact, the pattern of the Nike Epic React Flyknit, with its slightly finer and firmer sole, realizes the functionality of a running shoe, but the pattern of the Nike React Element 87's looser and coarser sole visually expresses the soft bounce of a casual shoe, producing a sophisticated result from a primitive approach.

The React Element 87's upper also shares this modern take on an older design. Crafted from 100% TPE yarn, the textile upper is a modern, translucent material, while the eyelets and heel clip are nods to iconic products of the past.
The React Element 87's prototype is the Nike Internationalist.
As the heel clip clearly shows, it draws on not only the 1981 original but also later models. It offers a fresh interpretation of Nike's past, present, and future, and expresses expectations for the potential of footwear in everyday life.

For the Nike React Element 87, this mission was realized by applying a computational design filter to a piece of foam that had holes drilled into it. The result is a new form for Nike React technology, a fresh interpretation of a familiar running shoe, and an avant-garde new upper.

The React Element 87 will be available on NIKE.COM and at select NIKE retailers.
