Issey Miyake Men's Urban Life Studies [Men's Fall/Winter 2018-19]

Jan 19, 2018

Yusuke Takahashi's ISSEY MIYAKE MEN held its Fall/Winter 2018-19 collection show at the Goethe-Lyric, a theater built in the mid-19th century. The collection theme was "In the Whirlwind of Urban Life." Takahashi continues to create clothing for city dwellers, projecting the sensations of urban life, from sensory aspects such as the rhythm, speed, and change of daily life to visual aspects such as painted walls. Using layering techniques that combine colors and materials, the collection offers functional and innovative workwear. Jackets and pants adorned with original tape made from polyester stretch yarn create silhouettes that take advantage of the tape's durability and stretch properties, creating a sporty yet sophisticated look. No ironing is required, making them ideal for travel. The reversible series features jackets and coats in a double-weave striped fabric made from a cotton base and a brushed black wool base. A distinctive feature of the collection is that it is reversible, using a single piece of fabric rather than layering different materials on one side. A green coat, printed black on one side and garment-dyed from worsted wool after sewing, showcased the beautiful nuances emanating from the material.

All of the motifs featured this season were born by chance, such as prints created by dropping square pieces of fabric from above, and jackets and pants featuring striped patterns created by randomly folding and pressing, expressed in cut jacquard using glossy and matte polyester threads.

While playful with motifs and materials, the collection adds color to everyday life with simple silhouettes, making it truly a collection aimed at urban dwellers.
