On January 17th, Pierpaolo Piccioli's Valentino men's show for Fall/Winter 2018-19 took place at the former Rothschild Mansion in Paris. The collection showcased a beautiful, exquisite balance of romanticism and aristopunk (a portmanteau of aristocracy and punk), incorporating sporty elements and making the most of the brand's technical expertise as an haute couture brand. With '80s music by artists such as Japan, David Sylvian, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Visage playing in the background, models appeared clad in sweatshirts layered with jersey blousons and double-face coats. Sneakers were worn, and studs were added to the armholes and hems of the coats for a punkish look. The sporty blouson jacket is also made from double-faced cashmere and features an appliquéd VLTN logo. Almost every step is done by hand, subtly showcasing the beauty of handcraft. The VLTN logo, which was introduced last season, is particularly prevalent on sportswear, and also appears on the collaborative jacket with Moncler.

The coats and blousons feature inlays, created by joining together small pieces to create motifs, making full use of Valentino's signature couture techniques. Motifs include flowers, camouflage, and tigers and dragons. The tiger and dragon motifs, inspired by Valentino Garavani's 1967-68 haute couture collection, are also featured on bags and other accessories, adding a touch of elegance to the collection.

While the collection features decorative elements such as studs, inlays, and beaded embroidery, this season's collection is characterized by simple silhouettes and lightweight finishes using double-faced fabrics. Every look exuded a modern feel, creating a collection that felt incredibly fresh.
