On October 13th, matohu presented their 2018 Spring/Summer collection at the KIRIKO LOUNGE on the 6th floor of Tokyu Plaza Ginza. The theme of this 16th installment of the "Japanese Eye" series, which explores the Japanese perspective on beauty, was "decoration." The show served as the opening event for the "Japanese Eye: Iki" exhibition, which opened the following day at Tokyu Plaza Ginza. "Until now, I've tended to express a quiet, refined Japan, known for its "wabi-sabi" aesthetic, but this time I've taken a more flashy and energetic approach to the collection, expressing the magnificent and magnificent Japanese aesthetic seen in festival floats and the decorations of Nikko Toshogu Shrine," said designer Hiroyuki Horihata about the collection.
Horihata explained that the etymology of the word "kazari" comes from "kazashi," meaning to insert flowers into the hair, and that this was incorporated into the designs and textiles of this collection. The first look featured a peony-patterned dress, presenting a bright and vibrant worldview.
Along with live piano music by Hatanaka Masato, looks were introduced one after another, including ones that used gold and silver accents, ones with bird feather patterns printed all over the back, ones accessorized with earrings featuring sparkling bird feathers and clouds, and ones featuring straw hats with shimenawa and peony flower motifs. The looks, which boldly enjoy color and decoration without being bound by convention, revealed matohu's aggressive attitude. For this collection, the designers collaborated with Haute Mode Hirata's Oko Ishida, Kyoto-based artist Hiroto Rakusho, and accessory designers Akiko Ban and Taiyo Nagano on bags, hats, and other accessories, allowing them to pursue a decorative and flamboyant worldview. Horihata recalls that the textile production involved hand-painting large pieces of fabric measuring 2.5 meters, a process that required considerable energy. Furthermore, matohu announced the publication of a booklet titled "Ren," inspired by their desire to encourage people to "enjoy wearing clothes as part of their daily lives and as part of culture." The magazine will feature event announcements and reports, as well as interviews with creators, and will serve as a platform to invigorate the new fashion community matohu aims to create. "Going forward, we want to communicate matohu's activities through the brand," the two matohu members stated.
