The "Sketch Travel: Building Libraries for African Children" exhibition will be held at "8/ CUBE 1,2,3" on the 8th floor of Shibuya Hikarie from June 26th. Admission is free.
The exhibition will display and sell all works from the "Sketch Travel" project, which features 71 Japanese and international artists active in the anime, manga, and picture book industries, including Hayao Miyazaki, Taiyo Matsumoto, Katsuya Terada, and Daisuke Tsutsumi. Each piece is a one-of-a-kind print created exclusively for the exhibition and available for purchase at the official online shop. Proceeds will be used to establish libraries for children in Africa through Room to Read, an international NGO promoting literacy education.
In addition, workshops, autograph sessions, and talk events with participating artists are scheduled during the exhibition.
The Sketch Travel Project was started by Daisuke Tsutsumi, who was in charge of art direction for "Toy Story 3" at animation studio Pixar, and French animator Gerard Guerlé. Each artist was tasked with illustrating one page and then handing it over to another artist, and over the course of four and a half years, from 2006 to 2011, one sketchbook traveled around the world, with a total of 71 artists from 12 countries participating. The sketchbooks were then auctioned, and the proceeds were used to raise funds through Room to Read to build libraries and other facilities in five countries, including Cambodia.
