"HOKUSAI - It was all Hokusai's work." Exhibition currently being held in Kyobashi - Experience the "origins of manga and anime"

Event Date:2025.09.13-11.30
Sep 22, 2025
From September 13th to November 30th, the "HOKUSAI - It Was All Hokusai's Work" exhibition is being held at CREATIVE MUSEUM TOKYO in Kyobashi, Tokyo. This ambitious exhibition takes a new approach, not only seeing Hokusai as a "master of ukiyo-e = paintings of Mt. Fuji," but also re-examining him as the origin of the ideas and drawing techniques that are common to modern manga and anime. The museum is open every day during the exhibition period, and until 8pm on Fridays, Saturdays, and days before holidays, making it easy to visit.

The exhibition will shed light on Hokusai's "power to live in the present" through visual language such as the speed of his lines, his panel-based thinking, exaggeration, and humor. The exhibition will feature over 400 works, including all 15 chapters of "Hokusai Manga" (Urakami Collection), "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji: Under the Great Wave off Kanagawa," and his later work "One Hundred Views of Mount Fuji," a series of three chapters and 102 prints. Additionally, 16 recently discovered original drawings will be on public display for the first time, attracting attention. The exhibition's approach, juxtaposing the originals with enlarged versions, allows visitors to experience the "breath of the lines." Visitors can visually confirm the continuity between Hokusai's paintings and the expressions of manga and anime.

The official ambassador for this exhibition is King & Prince's Kaito Takahashi. At the press conference, he said, "This exhibition will make you feel like you've jumped into the world of Hokusai's work." A special audio guide with Takahashi navigating the exhibit will also be available at the venue. Adding his own perspective adds a more dimensional dimension to the interpretation of the work.

This exhibition reexamines Hokusai not as a "master of the past," but as the starting point of today's visual culture. Through the originals and enlarged displays at the Kyobashi venue, you can experience the breath of the handcrafted work as you explore Hokusai's techniques, which pulse through modern expression: line, speed, exaggeration...
