Photo: DiorDior, under artistic director Maria Grazia Chiuri, held its Spring/Summer 2018 women's collection show at the Musée Rodin in Paris on September 26th. The collection was inspired by the story of Niki de Saint Phalle's meeting with Marc Bohan in the 1960s.
A slogan T-shirt appeared, reading "Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?" This is the title of an essay by art historian Linda Nochlin published in Art News in 1971, a phrase that Chiuri found inspiration in. Niki de Saint Phalle is often mentioned in the lineage of feminism and served as an inspiration for this season's collection.
In fact, Niki de Saint Phalle has deep ties to Dior. During her time as a model, she met designer Marc Bohan in 1965, and pieces featured updated versions of Marc Bohan's designs from the 1960s.
The first half of the collection featured looks that interpreted sporty real clothing in accordance with Dior's codes. For nightwear, a look that was characteristic of Maria Grazia Chiuri, pairing a bodysuit with an inner layer with a tulle skirt, was still alive and well. The collection as a whole was filled with a pop and optimistic vibe, as exemplified by the combination of a 1960s-inspired marine striped top and a skirt embroidered with Niki de Saint Phalle designs.
