Daido Moriyama's photo exhibition "1965~" will be held at Takeshiba. Curated by Yoshihiko Ueda.

Jun 3, 2013

Photographer Daido Moriyama's photo exhibition "1965~" is running until July 20th at Gallery 916 in Takeshiba, Tokyo. The exhibition, housed in a renovated warehouse, features over 70 cityscape photographs taken by Moriyama, who sees cities as "one giant body of desire." Photographer Yoshihiko Ueda, curator of the gallery, selected works from Moriyama's career spanning from 1964, when he became independent as a photographer, to the present. A photo book titled "Daido Moriyama" (916 Press & Akaaka Art Publishing, ¥3,465) has also been published in conjunction with the exhibition, featuring 106 photographs spanning Moriyama's career. Born in Osaka in 1938, Moriyama worked for a commercial design company while in high school and then went independent as a graphic designer. At the age of 22, he entered the photography world after meeting photographer Takeji Iwamiya. After working as an assistant to Eikoh Hosoe, he went independent as a photographer in 1964. He continued to publish his works in photography magazines such as Camera Mainichi, Asahi Graph, and Asahi Camera, and in 1967 he won the Japan Photo Critics Association Newcomer Award for Nippon Gekijyo. He has also exhibited his work overseas, including the 2012 exhibition William Klein + Daido Moriyama at London's Tate Modern.
