"Japanese Photography 1968," a photo exhibition exploring modern Japanese photography from the late 1960s to early 1970s, will be held at the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum in Ebisu, Tokyo, from May 11 to July 15. The late 1960s saw significant changes in the history of Japanese photography, amid a backdrop of wars, revolutions, and assassinations around the world and increasingly radical student movements within Japan. This exhibition focuses on 1968, a year marked by a number of symbolic events, including the opening of the "100 Years of Photography: A History of Japanese Photographic Expression" exhibition, a feature article in Camera Mainichi magazine by Kiyoji Otsuji introducing the trend of young photographers capturing the everyday as "comporal photography," the launch of the photography magazine Provoke: Provocative Materials for Thought by Takuma Nakahira and Koji Taki, the expansion of student movements, the Paris Uprising, and the anti-Vietnam War protests. The exhibiting artists include Tomatsu Shomei, Moriyama Daido, Nakahira Takuma, Takanashi Yutaka, Tamoto Kenzo, Takebayashi Moriichi, Kuwabara Koshio, Gocho Shigeo, Suzuki Kiyoshi, Niikura Takao, Tanaka Chotoku, Tamura Akihide, Watanabe Hitomi, and Unit 69.
The exhibition will feature photography magazines such as PROVOKE and Camera Mainichi, general magazines such as Asahi Journal and Asahi Camera, as well as materials related to the "100 Years of Photography - A History of Photographic Expression by Japanese People" exhibition, tracing how the concept of "photography" in Japan changed in the period centered around 1968.
