Asami Kiyokawa publishes her first original picture book, and an exhibition titled "Turning a bookstore into a picture book" is currently being held at Kashiwa-no-ha T-SITE.

Aug 18, 2017

To celebrate the publication of artist Asami Kiyokawa's first original picture book, "Coco-chan and Cardboard-chan" (published by Little More), an exhibition titled "Coco-chan and Cardboard-chan: Asami Kiyokawa Turns a Bookstore into a Picture Book" is currently being held at Kashiwanoha T-SITE in Chiba.
The exhibition is a unique project that brings the world of picture books to life throughout Tsutaya Bookstore, centering on "Coco-chan and Cardboard-chan" and incorporating Asami Kiyokawa's classic picture book series and art books. A giant, three-meter-tall cardboard sculpture created specifically for the exhibition is on display on the first floor of the store. The pop and colorful sculpture, seemingly jumping out of the world of a picture book, is designed like a tunnel that children can enter, transcending the boundaries between the book and reality, the future and the present.
On the second floor, an experience corner is available where visitors can immerse themselves in the world of the picture book using cutting-edge virtual reality technology. By putting on "Danball-chan," a character from the picture book, on your head, you can enjoy 360-degree VR content through the built-in head-mounted display. There will also be an "Original Art Exhibition" where original illustrations from the picture book, including never-before-seen cuts, will be displayed on a bookshelf. There will also be a "Picture Book House" themed around six of Kiyokawa's classic picture book series, such as "Night on the Galactic Railroad" and "The Little Mermaid," where you can enter to read a book or take a commemorative photo in the photo space. Furthermore, during the event, restaurants within Kashiwa-no-ha T-SITE will be offering limited-edition collaborative menus themed around the world of picture books. If you purchase eligible menu items such as "Cardboard-chan Bread" (500 yen including tax), a collaboration between "Coco-chan and Cardboard-chan" and "THE GROUNDS BAKER," "Apple and Japanese Black Tea Shaved Ice" (1,080 yen including tax), a collaboration between "Night on the Galactic Railroad" and "Kyoto Hayashiya Roasting Kobo," or "Mermaid Cake" (680 yen including tax), a collaboration between "The Little Mermaid" and "Cafe comme ca," you will receive an original placemat from each picture book.
