YASUTOSHI EZUMI's 2018 Spring/Summer collection was held on August 25th at TRUNK (HOTEL) in Shibuya, Tokyo. This season's theme was "collage." The collection kicked off with a trench coat with denim wrapped around the waist. The sleeves of the trench coat were tied with a belt, and the denim was arranged like a pleated skirt at the back. Other trench coats featured string accents, and others featured sleeves of a different color, making them sleeveless or asymmetrical. The denim jackets and skirts, first used in a collection a year ago, also featured asymmetrical designs, with different sides and fronts. A red shirt dress featured a corset-like waistline, while a white shirt dress featured a defined waist and trench-coat-like sleeves. Military and marine styles were given new looks with the use of strings and drawstrings. Even masculine striped shirts are transformed into new pieces by being wrapped around the body, asymmetrical, or adding trench-coat-like sleeves. While some pieces combine stripes and ethnic materials, the focus is not on the collages of materials used in the invitation graphics, but rather on deconstructing and reconstructing standard items and details. Yasutoshi Esumi, who also serves as creative director for CoSTUME NATIONAL's women's collection, also drew attention with his designs, incorporating details like the use of strings, common to CoSTUME NATIONAL, into pieces that are characteristic of Esumi. "I've been moving away from the architecture I've been working on for the past two or three years, and through trial and error, I've added, subtracted, mixed, and expanded parts and elements, creating pieces that rely on my intuition rather than a conceptual approach," said Yasutoshi Esumi. He also announced that the brand will be changing its name to "EZUMI" starting with the Fall/Winter 2018-2019 collection. "In order to expand globally, we made it easier to understand and easier for people overseas to remember," said Esumi. Future developments are sure to be a focus of attention.
