World Heritage registration confirmed! Photo exhibition by Shinya Fujiwara capturing the unknown side of sacred Okinoshima and its national treasures

Jul 11, 2017

From July 19th to August 1st, the 8th floor hall of Nihonbashi Takashimaya will host a photo exhibition of Okinoshima, which has been gaining attention due to its recent inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. "Okinoshima: The Sacred Shosoin Treasure House in the Sea - Photographed by Fujiwara Shinya" is a must-see. Located in the Genkai Sea off Fukuoka Prefecture, Okinoshima is a place where access to the island is strictly restricted, and rules remain in place to this day. National rituals have been held here since ancient times, and it remains a sacred place where Shinto priests from Munakata Taisha Shrine offer prayers alone. Additionally, the approximately 80,000 sacred treasures excavated from the island have been designated national treasures, earning it the nickname "Shosoin Treasure House in the Sea." The exhibition offers an opportunity to view the divine and fantastical scenery of the island and its numerous national treasures through approximately 70 photographs by photographer and author Fujiwara Shinya.
