21_21 DESIGN SIGHT, located in Tokyo Midtown, Roppongi, will be hosting the special exhibition "'How Far Will They Go?' Grand Projects" from June 23 to October 1. The exhibition showcases the dynamic work of artists from a variety of fields, including Christo and Jeanne-Claude, and Yusuke Asai. The exhibition is directed by Naoko Aono, a writer and editor with extensive experience in architecture, design, and art. Starting with Christo and Jeanne-Claude's "Floating Piers," a 3-kilometer floating fabric bridge that appeared on Lake Iseo in Italy in June 2016, the exhibition explores their creative endeavors spanning more than 50 years. It also features interviews filmed specifically for the exhibition, the world premiere of "Floating Piers," and drawings, maps, and photographs from their ongoing "Mastaba, United Arab Emirates Project." Junya Ishigami, an architect who works in architecture and landscape design, will be showcasing a project model for a 1.35m wide x 45m high church currently under construction in a valley in Shandong Province, China. Yusuke Asai, a painter and artist who is also participating in the just-opened Northern Alps Art Festival 2017, will be showcasing a work he has reconstructed using soil from Tokyo Midtown. Other participating artists include LUCERNE FESTIVAL ARK NOVA, Numen/For Use, Dani Karavan, Georges Rousse, and Nishino Tatsu.
A variety of programs are planned, including talks and explanations by participating artists visiting Japan from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm on June 23rd, a talk by the exhibition planning team from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm on July 8th, a talk titled "Archiving the Project" from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm on July 22nd, and a "Nishino Tatzu Installation Nighttime Special Event" from 9:30 pm to 8:30 am the following day on July 14th and 28th.
