ECO EDO Nihonbashi Art Aquarium 2017 ~Edo Goldfish Coolness~ & Night Aquarium, which has become a well-established summer tradition coloring the streets of Nihonbashi, will be held at Nihonbashi Mitsui Hall from July 7th to September 24th.
Now in its 11th year, the exhibition by art aquarium artist Kimura Hidetomo will be even more luxurious than ever, with four new works being added: "Tamaterium," a gold leaf installation with a Tamatebako (Treasure Box) motif that resembles the entire venue as "Ryugu-jo Castle," "Ryugu-shiki Emaki," a video piece that expresses the world of "Ryugu-jo Castle," "Floor-hanging Goldfish Decoration," which combines the movement of swimming goldfish with video, and "Kutani Goldfish Appraisal," in which goldfish swim gracefully inside a Kutani ware vessel decorated with goldfish designs. "This year marks a new beginning for me, and I've returned to my roots as an Art Aquarium artist, incorporating sea fish in addition to goldfish. I hope you enjoy the fantastical world created by approximately 8,000 ornamental fish," said Kimura.
In addition to simply looking at goldfish, this exhibition combines music, scents, and light to create a sense of coolness that appeals to all five senses. The exhibition also features special stages such as DJ sets and a courtesan show featuring Gion maiko and geisha, as well as original cocktails. At the Night Aquarium after 7 PM, you can enjoy the artworks while sipping on the "Urashima Cocktail" or "Otohime Cocktail" (¥1,500 each), inspired by the Dragon Palace of Japan, or the dessert cocktail "Ranchu" (¥1,500), made with a whole nectarine.
In addition, ECO EDO Nihonbashi is hosting a "Goldfish Sweets & Bar Stroll" event, offering goldfish-themed sweets and bar menu items, based on the theme of "cooling off with food." While viewing the aquarium, why not try some of the special sweets and bar menus from the long-established shops, department stores, luxury hotels, and patisseries that line Nihonbashi?
The exhibition, which has attracted a total of 7.3 million visitors, will travel to Nijo Castle, a former imperial villa in the ancient capital of Kyoto, after its run at the Nihonbashi venue in Tokyo, as "Art Aquarium Castle - Kyoto's Dance of the Goldfish, Commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the Restoration of Imperial Rule."
