Looking at the world through the "experience of units." 21_21's "Unit Exhibition" is linked to Roppongi Art Night

Dec 1, 2014

"21_21 DESIGN SIGHT" will be hosting the "Units Exhibition - How Much? How Much? How Much?" exhibition starting February 20, 2015. Various units of measurement are used in all kinds of manufacturing processes, from architecture and product development to printing and packaging. Units establish standards for things that are difficult to grasp, such as air, water, light, sound, and the natural environment, allowing for comparison and sharing. This exhibition aims to transform our everyday perspectives and bring about new discoveries and creativity by filtering everyday objects and events through units. A replica of the "Prototype of the Metre," created in accordance with the 1875 Treaty of the Metre, represents the former national standard for one meter. "Experience Units" displays a variety of items that allow visitors to experience basic units such as width, weight, and ideal height. "Comparing Time: 'awaglass'" explores how people have visualized the concept of time and how they perceive it, using a bubble clock that measures time using bubbles. Additionally, the exhibition will feature visual and designed exhibits that visualize invisible units, such as "Comparison of Speeds," which uses video to illustrate the reality of speed, and "Lengths of 1-100," which involves finding everyday objects measuring between 1 and 100 centimeters and displaying them in order of height. Related programs include the opening event "About This? About That? How Much?" by Io Nakamura and others, and the workshop "From Disassembly to Creation" by Yu Yamada and Nakadai Co., Ltd., as well as Helmut Smits' "1 Mater Party" event, a talk event "The World of 1 Second" by Tomohiro Okazaki and others, and the Roppongi Art Night special "Let's Everyone Measuring: Measurement Tour of the Unit Exhibition." The exhibition will also feature a "Measuring Shop," a concept shop for the unit exhibition. This free, unit-related shop will offer a variety of items for sale by weight, allowing visitors to experience units of measurement.
The planning members are Nakamura Io, Suzuno Koichi (TORAFU Architects), Inamoto Yoshinori (AXIS), Okamoto Ken, Suga Shunichi, and Terayama Norihiko (studio note). Participating artists include Aramaki Yu, Onishi Maki + Hyakuta Yuki/o+h, and Ono Yusuke, representing a total of 20 groups.
