Dior presented its 2014-15 Autumn/Winter haute couture collection. The show was held in a circular venue specially constructed in the gardens of the Rodin Museum.
This season, artistic director Raf Simons explored the meaning of "modern," fusing inspiration from the near future with ideas derived from exploring the past.
In an especially luxurious atmosphere, with fresh flowers (phalaenopsis orchids) adorning the walls of the venue, a lightweight tulle dress, an adaptation of the traditional 18th-century crinoline dress, appeared. In the world of haute couture, full-length dresses are usually shown towards the end of a show, but by deliberately showing it at the beginning, it left a strong impression. The experimental endeavors continued, showcasing a rich variety of 62 pieces, including a silk dress that combined a pilot suit with a traditional dress, a long, curved coat inspired by the Edward VII era, a jumpsuit inspired by workwear, simple dresses and suits with a casual feel, a series of reconstructed 18th-century court formal wear, a series of coats inspired by the 1950s, and hand-stitched pleated dresses.
Although the world of couture is inherently prone to anachronism, the collection was constructed with new color combinations while incorporating elements of sportswear and workwear. Furthermore, new decorative techniques, such as resin fringe and technical pleated trimmings, were discovered, giving the entire collection an ultra-modern feel.
Raf says, "I wanted to start by rethinking what modernity means and starting with a language that was the complete opposite of what I'd used at Dior up until now. The challenge was to take contemporary style in a very historical direction, to bring a simple, casual essence to something that might seem forced. That's the attitude that's important."
