Exhibition tracing the history of European fashion including Saint Laurent and Alaïa in Shinjuku, with denim special

Mar 5, 2015

Bunka Gakuen Costume Museum will hold the exhibition "European Mode" from March 7th to May 13th.

This exhibition focuses on the history of European women's fashion over approximately 250 years, from the Rococo period of the 18th century to the end of the 20th century. Beginning with the dresses worn by royalty and aristocrats, the exhibition showcases the trends and styles that emerged one after another among young people and the general public, along with the social context of the time. It offers a glimpse into the changes in designers' sensibilities and philosophies.

In addition, a special feature will be focused on denim. How did denim, originally a workwear item in the 19th century, become a popular fashion item? The exhibition will also feature mail-order catalogs from the time and denim suits from the 1980s, and discuss denim trends and history up to the present day.

Gallery talks will be held on March 28th and April 25th, starting at 1:30 PM.
