"Listening to Lines," an exhibition examining simple lines, will be held at Ginza Maison Hermès Forum from April 24 to July 5.
"Listening to Lines" is a group exhibition that responds to the "Simple Forms: Where Does Beauty Come From?" exhibition at the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo (April 25 to July 5). The venue will present works by eight artists focusing on lines.
Among these, the works of three artists—Carsten Nicolai, Xu Bing, and Roger Caillois—embody the theme of "lines found in nature." Carsten Nicolai focuses on natural science and the underlying structures, such as grids formed by mathematical formulas and the moiré phenomenon caused by misalignment of lines or points. Xu Bing's "Background Story" uses collected plants, trash, and glass to create landscapes that resemble a kind of optical illusion. Additionally, French critic Roger Caillois, known for his book "Drawings of Stone," presents mysterious line drawings from his stone collection, which appear when agate and marble are cut. Two artists' works depict "lines found in everyday life." The Japanese twin artist duo, Akiko and Masako Takada, create unexpected landscapes among familiar objects by creating the illusion of scale in magazines, playing cards, maps, and gardens. Meanwhile, Ignacio Uriarte, who has experience working in a corporate setting, creates simple works using stationery such as A4 paper, BIC ballpoint pens, and rubber bands, drawing inspiration from small actions that begin in the office. Other works included in the exhibition represent the starting point of lines. Drawings by Asako Kujirazu leap out of their limited space like an organism with its own life, stretching infinitely across the walls and ceiling. "Manga Pot," by Japanese architects Atelier Bow-Wow, is a robotic library, true to its name. The library itself becomes a symbolic platform that gives birth to free forms and circuits of thought. Furthermore, Niel Troni focuses on the stage before a line is formed, and continues to produce works in which he pointillizes it with a 30cm sense.
