Vivienne Sassen's first fashion feature shoot in Japan. Shiseido's "Hanatsubaki" April issue

Mar 5, 2015

Shiseido published the April issue of its corporate culture magazine, Hanatsubaki, on March 5th. The articles are also available via the Hanatsubaki smartphone app. This issue features a variety of projects around the theme of "Voyage." At the center of the story is a fashion feature shot by photographer Vivienne Sassen. This marks her first time shooting such a feature for a Japanese magazine. For the shoot, Sassen interpreted the theme as "sightseeing," or the act of "observing the light of a country" in the I Ching. Through uniquely Japanese lighting, makeup, fashion, and posing, she creates her own unique, otherworldly worldview amidst Kyoto's traditional landscapes. Additionally, a series of interviews features art writer Mari Hashimoto as a guest, delving into the reality of the profession of "translating art." Other interesting serial projects include Yoko Tawada's short story "A Journey to India and Germany," artist Yasumasa Morimura's "Poisonous People of Beauty," and illustrator Harumin Asao's "The Microscope of Beauty."
