Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Celebrates 55th Anniversary of Tennyo Statue with Limited Edition Items Including Canned Crab and Pure Gold Oval Coins

Mar 29, 2015

The Magokorozo (Heavenly Maiden Statue), located in the central hall on the first floor of the Mitsukoshi Nihonbashi Main Store, will celebrate its 55th anniversary this April. To commemorate the occasion, the store will be selling approximately 160 limited-edition items, including artwork, fashion accessories, and food, that pay homage to the statue, starting April 1st. The statue, a massive 11-meter sculpture, was installed in the central hall of the Mitsukoshi Nihonbashi Main Store in 1960. It took 10 years to create the statue, crafted by the renowned master craftsman, Gengen Sato. Mushanokoji Saneatsu also contributed writings to the statue's completion. The Mitsukoshi Isetan Grand Birthday Festival, held from April 1st to 7th, will feature approximately 160 commemorative items celebrating the statue's 55th anniversary. Koji Kinutani, who was recognized as a Person of Cultural Merit in 2014, has created a new work paying homage to the statue, and a ceramic artist who admires Gengen Sato has also created overglaze porcelain. In addition to artwork, commemorative canned versions of famous sweets featuring the heavenly maiden statue will also be available. Limited-edition items are also available, including a West leaf pie and cookie set (1,600 yen) and Yoku Moku Petit Cigare (1,000 yen), both packed in cans featuring an impressive image of the heavenly maiden. Also available are two oval coins (550,000 yen) crafted from 55g of pure gold to commemorate the 55th birthday of the heavenly maiden statue. There's also a tea box (6,800 yen) with a realistic laser-engraved image of the heavenly maiden statue, and a canned crab (27,000 yen) featuring the heavenly maiden statue, a popular gift from Mitsukoshi for the mid-year and year-end holidays. The heavenly maiden statue, the iconic symbol of Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Main Store, is a sight to behold upon first sight and can be viewed at any time during business hours in the central hall on the first floor of the main building.
