Yamaguchi Sayoko's jewelry collection "uruyui" is given a modern twist at Shinjuku Isetan

Sep 10, 2015

From September 16th to 28th, Isetan Shinjuku will be showcasing accessories that are a collaboration between traditional craftsmen and popular brands that express Japanese beauty in the accessories section on the first floor of the main building. Modern interpretations of jewelry pieces designed by Yamaguchi Sayoko will also be available.

This project showcases the artisanal skills of traditional Japanese craftsmen in collaboration with 11 accessory brands available at Isetan Shinjuku. The harmony created by the encounter between the sensibilities of each brand and the artisan's skills is infused with the "spirit of Japan."

Grosse, a long-established German jewelry brand, has collaborated with Edo Kiriko, said to be the beginning of Japanese cut glass. The design combines an oval motif inlaid with Edo Kiriko glass and a delicate chain for a modern look. The lineup includes six items: three types of necklaces (27,000 yen, 40,000 yen, 50,000 yen), earrings (36,000 yen), earrings (34,000 yen), and bangles (50,000 yen).

KEITA MARUYAMA creates brooches using the traditional tsumami-zaiku technique, which has been passed down since the Edo period. "Tsumami-zaiku" is a technique of creating patterns by cutting thin silk into small pieces, pinching them, folding them, and combining them. The brand offers pop arrangements of oriental motifs such as cranes (19,000 yen) and Mount Fuji (16,000 yen).

Festaria SANCTUARY has created accessories that breathe new life into "uruyui," a jewelry piece designed in the later years of Sayoko Yamaguchi, a top Japanese model who was active worldwide in the 1970s. Items on display include a necklace made with Kyoto braided cord (60,000 yen), a delicate chain necklace with large pearls and tiny diamonds (170,000 yen), a diamond ring engraved with a floral pattern (300,000 yen), and a ring expressing "tying" (15,000 yen).

Other items in the diverse lineup include a charm necklace incorporating lacquer makie and mother-of-pearl inlay by Angejouer A.D.A, earrings modeled after Kaga Temari (traditional Japanese temari balls) by veretta 8va, and a bangle with a rattan motif by ADER. This is a rare opportunity to discover your favorite jewelry while experiencing traditional crafts.
