Yohji Yamamoto's luxury accessory brand, discord Yohji Yamamoto, has announced a capsule collection in collaboration with three artists and opened a limited-time shop in the handbag/promotion section on the first floor of the Isetan Shinjuku flagship store. The exhibition runs until September 22nd.
This capsule collection is a collaboration between Yohji Yamamoto and three artists. The collaboration brings together artists from different genres: illustrator Yoshitaka Amano, photographer Hiroyuki Arakawa, and painter Yuka Asakura. While discord has traditionally been expressed in Yohji Yamamoto's signature black and white aesthetic, the capsule collection showcases a new and different side, using striking colors like blue and purple.
The collaboration with Yoshitaka Amano also adorns the main window. Following his interactions with Yohji Yamamoto, Amano created a monochrome series of artworks specifically for this collection. These original artworks were used to design leather items with a black and blue theme. The collection features items handcrafted by artisans, as well as items featuring illustrations printed on embossed leather, each meticulously crafted and crafted with exquisite taste and skill. The Amano collaboration line includes a lineup of business bags, born from Yohji Yamamoto's innovative approach of infusing business tools with artistic flair. All items featuring Yoshitaka Amano's illustrations are signed "2015 Amano," truly making them "wearable works of art." Hiroyuki Arakawa, who has been designing for Discord since their debut season, used X-ray photography of calla lilies and other flowers as the theme for the 2015-16 Autumn/Winter collection. Based on these images, he created new items exclusive to the capsule collection. While previously limited to white flowers, Discord suggested photographing colorful flowers for the first time. The vibrant blue flowers add impact to the delicate stoles. Each bag is handcrafted by artisans using lustrous glass leather to recreate the flower photographs. Each piece reflects the artisan's sensibility, and each piece is unique in its own way. A craftsman's expression is reached through repeated exchanges until they are satisfied.
Yuka Asakura created works featuring motifs of flowers and the female body. She selected items from her archives that were suitable as canvases for her paintings, and hand-painted each one with acrylic pigments. Each piece is unique, and the vibrant colors of red, orange, and yellow pop against the black leather. While Asakura's paintings were also used in the Spring/Summer 2016 Yohji Yamamoto (Homme) collection, which was presented in Paris in June, this capsule collection collaboration marks the first public debut. Yohji Yamamoto excels at discovering young talent and nurturing their individuality, and Asakura's future is sure to be a highlight.
In the limited shop's main window, collaboration items with Amano and large prints of Amano's original drawings that formed the basis of the capsule collection are displayed, creating an impressive space where you can experience the combination of "fashion and art." The capsule collection is based on Yohji Yamamoto and Isetan's idea of "This is JAPAN," and the buyer in charge at Isetan Shinjuku said that he hopes that many people, not just Yohji Yamamoto's customer base, will pick up the items, which were woven by Japanese artists and created by Japanese craftsmen.
