Toraya's special exhibition of Japanese sweets and rakugo, "Laughing Japanese Sweets," will be held at Tokyo Midtown

Dec 2, 2015

Toraya Tokyo Midtown will be holding a special exhibition titled "Laughing Japanese Sweets" from December 2nd to March 21st, 2016, centered around the theme of "laughter."

Wagashi, a familiar luxury item for Japanese people, comes in a wide variety to suit the climate and lifestyles of each region of the country, and has been featured in various literary and performing arts circles. The exhibition will feature seven stories featuring wagashi from "classical rakugo," a comedic art form that has been passed down in Japan since the Edo period, as well as 25 adorable and unique wagashi varieties collected from around the country.

The store will also be selling two Japanese sweets related to "laughter": "Sachiemi" (450 yen, excluding December 29th to January 15th and March 1st to 3rd), made from mochi rice cakes and featuring an "Okame" mask, which depicts the happy, smiling face of a woman; and "Egaoman" (450 yen, from December 29th to January 15th), a pure white sweet potato bun with a cute red dot in the middle. During the event, a rakugo performance by Tatekawa Dansho is also scheduled to be held, with details to be announced on Toraya's official website at a later date.
