As a special edition of "Today's Item," a daily series showcasing recommended products from our editorial team, we're introducing "Tokyo souvenirs" selected by fashion and beauty industry insiders, running until July 31st. This is the season when many people bring gifts for seasonal greetings or when returning home. If you're having trouble deciding what to bring, check out this list of top picks from connoisseurs.
Today's pick is the mame daifuku from Mizuho, a Japanese confectionery shop in Harajuku, Tokyo, recommended by Ms. Y, the women's PR manager for an Italian leather brand. Located on a side street off Omotesando, Mizuho has an elegant and tranquil atmosphere that's a departure from the Harajuku vibe. Established in 1981, the shop has been a beloved fixture in the area for nearly 30 years.
The plump and plump mame daifuku are characterized by their softness, which is apparent the moment you hold them in your hand. The finely textured mochi is kneaded with just the right amount of salty red bean paste, and the smooth texture is filled with a generous amount of not-too-sweet koshian (smooth bean paste). Mizuho only sells these two items: mame daifuku and monaka. The mochi is pounded every morning in the back of the store, the bean paste is cooked, and each one is carefully hand-wrapped. Mr. Y says he loves the "taste that has remained unchanged since ancient times."
"It's a popular store, so if you don't get there early, they might sell out," said judge Mr. Y. As expected, the mame daifuku is so popular that it sometimes sells out by mid-morning. In fact, when the editorial team visited Mizuho, there was a steady stream of people, even on a weekday, and several people were always lined up. The store is open from 9:00 AM. They also accept phone reservations, provided you pick up your order by 2:00 PM on the same day. The store lasts for one day.
Choosing a souvenir can be a bit overwhelming, but as Mr. Y says, "Rather than rushing to prepare something thoughtful for someone who is used to receiving souvenirs, regardless of age, they will be more than happy to receive this mame daifuku," so it's reassuring to have one "surefire" item in mind.
