The special exhibition "25th Anniversary: Mysterious Art: Trick, Trick, and Trick" will be held at the Hiratsuka Museum of Art in Kanagawa Prefecture from July 2 to August 28.
Our eyes, which control our sense of sight, are easily deceived. We are caught up in various illusions on a daily basis, such as mistaking perspective, mistaking up and down for left and right, or seeing things that aren't there because we believe they are. Artists who have focused on these illusions have used a variety of ingenious methods to create works that deceive and delight the viewer.
This exhibition introduces "trick-filled" works by 29 postwar artists that challenge our sense of sight and fixed images. The exhibition is organized around four key themes: "On Reality and Fiction," "Tricks in Classical Painting," "Op Illusion," and "Aspects of Realism." The exhibition will feature approximately 80 works, including Escher's "Watchtower," Kohei Nawa's "PixCell [Shoe #6(L)]," Yasumasa Morimura's "Portrait (Van Gogh)," Jiro Takamatsu's "Shadow No. 294," Shigeo Fukuda's "Shigeo Fukuda Exhibition," Miran Fukuda's "Beauty Looking Back: Group Portraits on a Mirror," Kaoru Ueda's "Nama Tamago J," and Ryusuke Fukahori's "Goldfish Sake: Naming Tsumugi." Experience the wonder of "seeing" and the joy of being deceived through the ingenious tricks employed by postwar artists. During the exhibition, street painter Kanako Matsumoto will hold a public workshop, as well as gallery talks and workshops led by curators.
