"Yuki Okumura and Hisae Takahashi" exhibition at Maison Hermès in Ginza, reviving the 1970s New York art scene

Jun 1, 2016

Artist Yuki Okumura's "Takahashi Naoya by Yuki Okumura" exhibition, celebrating Takahashi Naoya, will run from June 4th to September 4th at Ginza Maison Hermès Forum in Tokyo's Ginza district. The exhibition features Yuki Okumura, whose work is based on contemporary artistic concerns such as authorship and collaboration, in projects that begin with revisiting art history and interpreting the work of others, and Takahashi Naoya, who served as an assistant to Lucio Fontana in Milan and Robert Rauschenberg in New York, and collaborated with both artists, though his work has been largely lost to history. Driven by curiosity, Yuki Okumura discovered materials from Takahashi's exhibitions at Antwerp's legendary Wide White Space gallery. With the cooperation of the gallery owner at the time and a meeting with Takahashi himself, he has repeatedly attempted to comment on, represent, and collaborate with Takahashi in exhibitions in Brussels, Tokyo, and Amsterdam.

This exhibition features early works by Takahashi Naoya, who commissioned 22 artists, including Jasper Johns and Gordon Matta-Clark, to draw maps of the United States from memory, as well as a video piece in which Okumura Yuki answers interviews as Takahashi. Through the works discovered and created through the interaction between the two artists, the exhibition explores the ongoing state of art history.
