On June 16th, visvim presented their first ever runway show for their 2017 Spring/Summer collection at the Boboli Gardens in Florence, Italy. They were invited as guest designers at the 90th Pitti Immagine Uomo, where they showed both their men's and women's collections. Visvim is so well-known overseas that it's practically a must-visit for Western men's buyers when shopping in Tokyo, so it was only natural that they would present their first runway show at Pitti Uomo. Once again, their wide-ranging worldview and almost obsessive creative commitment were met with great praise. On the other hand, the fact that Visvim, whose products are based on American culture, was invited to Florence by Pitti Uomo, which has expanded its exhibitions based on Italian Classico and Italian fashion, suggests a major shift in the Italian men's market, as even residents of the mecca of Classico are forced to acknowledge the admiration for American casual wear that has been transforming the younger generation in Italy in recent years. This may be due to the influence of Hiroki Nakamura, a Japanese designer living in New York. It also seems to have been a hint to the domestic market from Pitti, which opened a new wing booth last year to feature Made-in-USA brands. The collection incorporates Japanese traditions such as sashiko, discharge dyeing, and hanten coats, while focusing on American vintage workwear like denim and sweatshirts, creating a unique Visvim look that stands out from the trend. Its image, which exudes a cheerful mood reminiscent of good old American cinema, is a valuable presence in today's men's scene. Text: Tatsuya Noda
