The theme of ISSEY MIYAKE's 2014 Spring/Summer collection is "Wearing Light." The collection incorporates the image of light falling straight through the clouds into its clothing.
Starlight is expressed through metallic textiles. An ultra-thin film is attached to Exaine, then punched to create a starry sky-like pattern and a taut form. Sharp silhouettes, evoking shooting stars and the refraction and reflection of light, are created using a technology developed from the Steam Stretch series, which shrinks fabric with steam heat.
The glowing white of the moon is expressed through the texture of grid-knit cotton and fabrics made with stretch yarns for the warp and weft. A jacket made of fabric knitted with modern yarns on an old-fashioned knitting machine and then transfer-pressed, features a unique silhouette thanks to a spirally cut pattern.
Sunlight is expressed through a soft, elastic 3D mesh fabric with a red and sky blue gradation. The series, made of layered, airy, thin fabrics, depicted overlapping light in colorful graphic patterns. The pale-toned shirts, characterized by their transparency, were made using a double-weave fabric with a white see-through fabric layered over a light-colored fabric, creating a relaxed silhouette. They were paired with structured skirts that added volume with layered, linear fabrics.
The show was also livened up by music by the "Braun Tube Jazz Band," a project by Open Reel Ensemble member Ei Wada, in which CRT television monitors were used as instruments to play music.
