To commemorate the 20th anniversary of its opening, the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum will hold the first public art museum exhibition tracing the work of Hiroshi Yamazaki, "Yamazaki Hiroshi: Plan and Chance," from March 7 to May 10. The exhibition will explore Yamazaki's career from a contemporary perspective through approximately 200 works, including representative photographs such as "HELIOGRAPHY," which visualizes the sun's light trails through long exposures, as well as his "Horizon Collection" and "Sakura" series, as well as new videos and other works that the artist has pursued in parallel with photography. In the early 1970s, Yamazaki began to question the idea of "finding a good subject to photograph," and began exploring the possibility of "shooting without choosing a subject." This led to a style of methodical exploration within "given frameworks" such as restricted landscapes and simple, featureless seascapes. His work is characterized by a combination of planned production and the chance that arises in the act of photography, and the interaction between these two elements creates his works.
This exhibition is an opportunity to get in touch with the essence of Yamazaki's world of expression through a series of major works spanning his career of over 45 years.
