Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo hosts an exhibition on Dan Flavin, a man who dedicated his life to the art of "light"

Jan 30, 2017

"DAN FLAVIN," an exhibition by American artist Dan Flavin, will be held at Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo in Jingumae, Tokyo, from February 1 to September 3.
Dan Flavin, a leading figure in the Minimalist movement, dedicated his life to exploring the use of light as an artistic medium. His first works using light were the "Icons" series, created between 1961 and 1963, in which he attached light bulbs and fluorescent lamps to eight square canvases.
From the 1960s to the 1970s, he created more complex forms, such as installations using the corners of rooms. Eventually, his scale expanded to encompass every corner of the space, stretching from the floor to the wall and up to the ceiling. At the same time, he experimented with a wide range of color variations and brightness, adjusting the hue and brightness by varying the length, number, and arrangement of fluorescent lamps, arranged vertically, horizontally, or diagonally. Furthermore, from the 1970s onwards, his compositions became increasingly large-scale, and he began to work on site-specific installations, created to exist in specific locations.

This exhibition pays tribute to Flavin's pioneering artistic practice by showcasing seven works from the collection of the Fondation Louis Vuitton, an art institution specializing in contemporary art and artists. These include "Untitled," "Alternate Diagonals of March 2 (to Don Judd)," "Monument for V. Tatlin," and "Untitled (to Alex and Nikki)."
