The international photography festival "KYOTOGRAPHIE Kyoto International Photography Festival 2017" will be held from April 15th to May 14th in Kyoto, one of the world's leading cultural cities.
"KYOTOGRAPHIE Kyoto International Photography Festival" exhibits precious photographs and collections by important Japanese and international artists in Kyoto's quaint historical buildings and modern modern architecture. It has gained popularity with each passing year, with approximately 250,000 visitors through the fourth festival.
This year, the fifth festival, will feature the theme of "LOVE," with domestic and international artists showcasing new and original works at Kyoto's temples, shrines, townhouses, and other locations. Photographer Nobuyoshi Araki will be exhibiting his latest work, "Love on the Desk," for the first time in Japan, in the scenic strolling garden with a pond. The work features photographs of objects placed on a desk, such as dolls, parts of human models, and flowers. Raphael Dallaporta will present works from the Chauvet Cave, a World Heritage Site said to contain the oldest known cave paintings, dating back approximately 36,000 years. Dallaporta was granted six-hour access to the cave, which is closed to the public for preservation purposes, and used his unique techniques to capture 360-degree images of the cave. Dallaporta recreates the cave's mystical and solemn atmosphere through an installation projecting his work onto 4K LED panels arranged in a three-dimensional space, as well as prints. Arnold Newman, known as the "master of portraiture" for capturing such famous figures as Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol, will be holding Japan's first major retrospective, featuring rare original prints. A special exhibition of the "BMW Art Car by Andy Warhol" will also be on display. Robert Mapplethorpe, one of the most influential artists of the late 20th century, will exhibit works exploring themes of natural beauty, physical beauty, bondage, and destruction, drawn from the private collection of Peter Marino, the architect behind the Chanel Ginza Building. Other exhibits include Isabel Munoz, internationally acclaimed for her dynamic portraits capturing the vitality of her subjects, and Hong Kong visual artist Yan Kallen, winner of the 2016 KG+ Award Grand Prize, established to promote young photographers. The exhibition also features weekend guided tours of several exhibitions, talks, and interactive workshops. There will also be an international portfolio review and masterclasses aimed at students, amateurs, and professionals, where exhibiting artists will teach students about photography from various angles.
