Architecture that makes the most of nature: Architect Terunobu Fujimori's exhibition held at Art Tower Mito

Feb 5, 2017

Architect Terunobu Fujimori's exhibition "Fujimori Terunobu: Architecture that Inspires Nature and Street Observation" will be held at the Contemporary Art Gallery of Art Tower Mito in Ibaraki Prefecture from March 11 to May 14. After achieving numerous accomplishments as a leading researcher in modern architectural and urban history, Terunobu Fujimori made his debut as an architect at the age of 45, designing the Shinchokan Moriya Historical Museum. Since then, he has continued to create unique architecture that transcends conventional concepts of architecture, combining new ideas with nostalgia evoking a distant past, such as a house with dandelions and chives planted on the roof and a teahouse resembling a birdhouse with pillars made of timber with the bark still attached. He is also well-known for designing and supervising the Mosaic Tile Museum in Tajimi City, Gifu Prefecture, which opened in June 2016. This exhibition will showcase Fujimori's representative works, which explore themes such as "how to utilize natural materials in modern architecture" and "how to incorporate plants into architecture," in an effort to restore the relationship between architecture and nature. The exhibition will feature models, blueprints, and photographs of representative architecture. Some exhibits, such as the Mosaic Tile Museum, will feature partial recreations. Fujimori also designed the grass roof for the main shop of La Collina Omihachiman, a long-established Japanese confectionery shop with over 140 years of history in Omihachiman, Shiga Prefecture, and the copper roof for the Taneya Group headquarters. Along with Taneya's sweets, there will also be a section showcasing Fujimori's architecture and Taneya's initiatives. Furthermore, material samples for roofs and walls, as well as furniture, from the buildings he has worked on, will be on display to showcase Fujimori's work. A new tea room will also be created in the gallery space, and tea ceremonies will be held during the exhibition.
