Condé Nast launches new businesses including e-commerce and new digital media

Dec 3, 2013

Condé Nast Japan, publisher of magazines such as "VOGUE JAPAN" and "GQ JAPAN," will launch a new e-commerce business in the fall of 2014 under the "Premium E-Commerce Project." In January, the company will also launch a new organization, Condé Nast Studio, to propose digital content and new original media. For the past four years, the company has been working on multi-platform content development, integrating print and digital media and enhancing the media value of its brands. The new business and organization aim to connect digital innovation to new business opportunities and establish a system to achieve this. The new "Premium E-Commerce Project" will offer exclusive products curated, developed, and coordinated by editors through magazines like "VOGUE JAPAN" and "GQ JAPAN," as well as through social media, computers, and mobile devices. QVC Japan, one of the world's largest TV shopping channels, will provide support for logistics, product development, and promotion, from raw material procurement to production and sales. The project is scheduled to launch in September of next year. The new Condé Nast Studios organization will offer digital tools, events, website and site management, interactive movie production, and original media distinct from existing magazines. Aiming to add digital technology to the company's brand power and content development capabilities, the company has partnered with Image Source (IMG SRC), a company recognized both domestically and internationally for its web design, systems development, and software development for spatial presentation using interactive media. Additionally, Vogue Girl creative director Ayumi Gunji will join the editorial staff, marking a complete restructuring of the magazine. President Jun Kitada explained, "We're not interested in or able to do the e-commerce business that others are doing, but we believe we can add value by selecting and editing quality content. We're blessed with a strong partner who can support us in areas we can't do ourselves. Condé Nast Studios is a new business division and digital creative agency. We want to leverage our strong brand to provide innovative digital solutions and new original media." QVC Japan also commented, "We have been supporting Fashion's Night Out since last year, and the products from the special fashion show broadcast from Spiral Hall sold out, so we are very much looking forward to the premium e-commerce as well" (Luis Grieco, Vice President of Merchandising). Image Source's President Hiroshi Koike said, "We hope to be able to provide innovative ideas, and we look forward to creating new things."
