The "Expanding Fashion" exhibition, based on editor Hayashi Nakako's book "Expanding Fashion," will be held at Art Tower Mito in Mito, Ibaraki, from February 22, 2014.

The exhibition sees fashion as a way to cultivate aesthetic sensibilities in people's daily lives and communicate their way of life and thoughts to others, and will showcase the work of artists who incorporate techniques such as performance and workshops, as well as works by photographers and contemporary artists associated with them. There will be no mannequins wearing clothes, and the exhibition aims to provide an opportunity to think about the concept of fashion. The exhibition will feature a new work by fashion photographer Takashi Homma reconstructing the year 1990, a corner of Kazunari Hattori's designs providing an overview of trends in independent publishing, including Here and There, which Hayashi edited, early video works by novelist and film director Miranda July, contemporary artist Ryoko Aoki, photographer Yurie Nagashima, American designer Susan Cianciolo, apparel brands such as COSMIC WONDER and BLESS, which Hayashi described as "an encounter with new imagination," and an installation created in collaboration between Keisuke Kanda, head of the clothing label Keisuke Kanda, and photographer Masashi Asada. There will also be a workshop where visitors can actually make clothes, organized by the fashion brand Form on Words.
