Toray has developed "Milany," a fashion textile made with ultrafine nylon fibers.
The fabric features a highly irregular (wedge-shaped) cross-section, with a single yarn fineness of 0.2 decitex, the world's highest standard. By creating subtle irregularities on the fabric's surface to reduce contact with the skin, the fabric has a smooth, silky feel that feels comfortable against the skin. At the same time, improved bending strength and textile processing that takes advantage of nylon's unique suppleness have succeeded in creating a soft yet firm texture, resulting in a revolutionary new type of textile.
Toray has been developing the "uts" series of ultrafine fiber textiles since 1993. Its diverse range of styles, from unbrushed fabrics with a technical sheen to suede-like textures, has earned it a high reputation in the global fashion market. On the other hand, while textiles using nylon fibers with a single yarn fineness of 1.0 decitex have become popular, primarily for sports and outdoor wear, it has been difficult to create a wide variety of textures and feel due to the difficulty in expanding the range of textures and feel of the material. Toray will promote "Milany" as the company's high-end nylon ultrafine fiber product.
The target items for "Milany" are outerwear such as down and padded coats, blousons, and jackets for both men and women, where freshness and a high-quality feel are required. Sales will begin in the fall/winter 2014 season. Prices will be 1,200 to 1,800 yen per meter (120cm to 140cm width, apparel included price). Sales are planned for 2,000 pieces (1 piece = approximately 50m) in the first year, and 10,000 pieces three years later.
