Toray launches newly developed nylon thread "Amilan BK," achieving a deep black color and soft texture.

Toray Industries, Inc. has begun full-scale sales of its newly developed ultra-black nylon yarn, "Amilan BK."

The development theme for this product was "a luxurious, deep black." By optimizing the black pigment used, the depth of color was improved by approximately 10% compared to conventional commercially available black nylon yarns (evaluated for knitted tights). By achieving a previously difficult deep black, apparel manufacturers can broaden their product planning options.

Another key feature of this product is its soft texture. By optimizing polymer filtration and dispersion technology, the single yarn fineness (thinness of a single strand) was reduced to 1.2 decitex. Furthermore, by applying high-speed yarn-making technology, the bulkiness of the false-twisted yarn was improved, resulting in a soft, comfortable feel against the skin.

Its environmental friendliness is also an important point. While dyeing is an essential process in textile manufacturing, black nylon yarn does not require dyeing after the weaving and knitting process because the black pigment is incorporated into the nylon polymer. Because Amilan BK requires no energy for dyeing and produces no dye wastewater, it is said to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 12% compared to conventional nylon yarn.

However, when incorporating black pigment into nylon polymer, controlling the pigment is a key issue. Conventional methods result in pigment particles clumping, resulting in uneven color in the yarn. Toray has overcome this problem with its unique processing technology. By uniformly and finely dispersing the black pigment in the polymer at a high concentration, Amilan BK achieves its distinctive deep black color.

Amilan BK will be launched with four varieties: 22T-10F, 33T-26F, 56T-48F, and 78T-68F. Toray plans to sell 100 tons in fiscal 2013 and 150 tons in fiscal 2016.
