James Chance & The Contortions, led by saxophonist and singer James Chance, a charismatic figure in post-New York punk, will perform in Japan for the first time in five years from January 22nd to 24th at Blue Note Tokyo in Minami-Aoyama, Tokyo. James Chance is a saxophonist, composer, and singer originally from Wisconsin, USA. He combines jazz-inspired improvisation with punk rock and is known as a key figure in the "no wave" culture of the 1970s. After moving to New York, he formed The Contortions in 1977 and shook up the music scene with his participation on the Brian Eno-produced album "NO NEW YORK." His compilation album, "Twist Your Soul - The Definitive Collection," released in 2010, has also been a best-seller. To celebrate his visit to Japan, Bar BACKYARD, located on the first basement floor of Blue Note Tokyo, will host a commemorative DJ party featuring musicians, artists, and designers from the "No Wave" movement at the time. On January 22nd, Hysteric Glamour's Nobuhiko Kitamura and Undercover's Jun Takahashi will appear; on the 23rd, musician and music producer Toshio Nakanishi and musician and author Masaya Nakahara will appear; and on the 24th, illustrator and art director Keiji Ito and contemporary artist Hiroyuki Matsukage will appear. Also, from January 13th to 24th, an exhibition of portraits by Anya Phillips, James Chance's girlfriend and manager, titled "PORTRAITS OF JAMES CHANCEBY ANYA PHILLIPS," will be held. Additionally, the photo book "BLACK & WHITE," featuring approximately 30 photographs including those on display, will be available for purchase.
