NikeLab's next generation of designers are creating an "Air" expression project. The concept is "walking on air."

Apr 7, 2017

To conclude the NikeLab "VISION-AIRS" program, five next-generation designers conducted a style experiment ("THE VISON-AIRS EXPERIMENTS IN STYLE") based on the concept of "walking on air."

The participating designers were Shijie He (Parsons School of Design), Liam Johnson (Central Saint Martins), Paula Canovas (Central Saint Martins), Wangbin Huang (Central Saint Martins), and Azar Rajabi (Domus Academy). The Nike Air VaporMax served as inspiration for their work.

Shijie He used plastic packaging film, which is used to protect furniture when moving it, to create a lightweight design that is breathable, soft, and flexible. Liam Johnson, who wanted to express buoyancy and lightness through air, used flocking material based on the concept of a tornado to create a luxurious yet strong line, while Wang Bin Huang was inspired by Flyknit and designed a bodysuit that wraps around the entire body using silver polyurethane material.

In addition, in Japan, the "NIKELAB presents 'Future of Air'" project will be held, which creates the future inspired by air. Under the theme of "Future of Air," works by Japanese artists will be exhibited on a special website (http://futureofair.com/), using the Nike Air VaporMax, equipped with the latest air, as a motif. Furthermore, creators who think ahead will express the "Future of Air" in their own way through their works, and a film that combines these works into a single piece of art will be released on the same website on April 28th. Participants in this Japanese project include Iguchi Kota, a video designer and creative director who represents both the creative teams TYMOTE and CEKAI and has won awards such as the global design award "D&AD," Takeda Maiko, a hat and accessory designer known for her costume collaboration with Bjork, and Hashimoto Mugi, a video artist and digital artist who won the New Face Award at the 19th Japan Media Arts Festival held by the Agency for Cultural Affairs.
