Riccardo Tisci's first ballet costumes, "Bolero," unveiled at the Paris Opera

May 7, 2013

The ballet "Bolero," for which Givenchy creative director Riccardo Tisci designed costumes, premiered at the Paris Opera on May 2nd.

The costumes designed by Tisci are nude-colored tulle bodysuits embroidered with skeleton patterns. "Bolero is the epitome of violence," he said, adding, "I designed it so that the dancers appear to be dancing naked. It expresses the duality of my own inner self: the dark side and the romantic side."

Although Tisci has been asked to design costumes for plays and operas many times in the past, this is his first time actually designing a costume. The deciding factors for him were his pride as an Italian at receiving the direct request from Brigitte Lefevre, director of the Paris Opera's National Ballet, and the involvement of talented and unique creators such as contemporary artist Marina Abramovic in the production.

The set design for the work is by Marina Abramovic, and the choreography is by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Damien Jalet. The production features star dancers from the Paris Opera, including Marie-Agnes Gillot, Aurelie Dupont, Jeremie Belingard, and Vincent Chaillet.

The performance will run until June 3rd, and tickets are sold out.
