The rapidly growing news media, The Huffington Post (THP), has finally arrived in Japan. The launch of The Huffington Post Japan took place on May 7th, the day of the site's launch. Arianna Huffington, the site's founder and president and editor-in-chief of THP Media Group, also made an appearance. For the special occasion, she chose a sparkling platinum power jacket with wide lapels and concave shoulders. This outfit, emblematic of a powerful woman, was from Alexander McQueen's Resort 2013 collection. Launched in 2005 after graduating from Cambridge University, THP has garnered attention as a new media outlet combining social media and news. It currently receives over 46 million monthly visits in the United States (as of January 2013, according to comScore) and has generated 260 million comments to date. In 2003, he ran against Arnold Schwarzenegger in the California gubernatorial election and won the Pulitzer Prize last year. Ariana said, "McQueen is a great brand, and I'm also interested in fashion as news." She smiled when told that the dragonfly pattern is also known as a lucky insect in Japan. For the launch, former Livedoor CEO Takafumi Horie, journalist Toshitaka Sasaki, journalist/media activist Daisuke Tsuda, and documentary filmmaker Tatsuya Mori joined THP Japan as bloggers. A panel discussion was also held at the launch, where Ariana, THP Editor-in-Chief Shigeki Matsuura, Twitter Japan CEO Masaaki Kondo James, and LINE Corporation Executive Officer and Head of the Advertising Business Group Shintaro Tabata discussed the election campaign. Will THP take root as a forum for public discourse in Japan? The future of this new media is attracting attention from all quarters.
