100 pieces of Tiffany's legendary jewelry on display at special exhibition at Hankyu Umeda Main Store

May 15, 2013

Tiffany & Co. is holding a special exhibition of archive jewelry, "A Glittering Legend - Tiffany's Treasures Now Revealed," at the Hankyu Umeda Gallery. The exhibition runs until May 20th.

The theme of this exhibition is the glamorous and exciting allure of New York, and it introduces the history of Tiffany through approximately 100 pieces of jewelry and other works.

The exhibition is further divided into four themes. "A Legacy of Diamonds" traces the path taken by founder Charles Lewis Tiffany to establish Tiffany as a global jeweler. Other pieces symbolizing Tiffany's history are lined up under the themes of "Nature," "Glamour," and "Trophies." Among the exhibits are the "Fleur de Mer" brooch, designed by Jean Schlumberger and owned by legendary Hollywood actress Elizabeth Taylor, and jewelry commissioned by Diana Vreeland, the charismatic editor-in-chief of American Vogue. Tiffany & Co. was founded in New York in 1837. Its business expanded in 1878 after purchasing one of the world's largest and most exquisite yellow diamonds. The company grew into a jeweler with a clientele that included dignitaries from all walks of life, and Charles Tiffany was hailed as the "King of Diamonds." The company's jewelry design was also highly acclaimed, and its exhibits won awards at the 1878 Paris World's Fair. Charles' son, Louis Comfort Tiffany, became a pioneer of Art Nouveau and continued to employ prominent designers such as Schlumberger and Elsa Repetti. Even now, more than 125 years later, Tiffany Blue is coveted by women around the world.
